Fast Reservoir Model Diagnosis & Optimisation For improved well planning, delineation of remaining oil and enhanced oil recovery
Challenges
- Geological and reservoir models offer great insight into future reservoir performance. They are crucial for identifying optimal well locations, delineating remaining reserves and improving reservoir management strategy.
- With the enormous growth in field data, it has become increasingly more challenging to reconcile the reservoir model with multiple kinds of reservoir data and keep the models current.
- Problem diagnosis of reservoir models is the most important first step in optimizing the reservoir models, which is often a tech-laden and experience-demanding task.

Reservoir Model QC Using Seismic Data
Simulation to Seismic (Sim2Seis) is a forward modelling technique used to predict/generate the synthetic seismic response from a static or dynamic reservoir model. There are two key components of a Sim2Seis workflow: reservoir model (geological and/or simulation model) and petro-elastic models (PEMs). PEMs are rock physics functions which relate reservoir properties such as rock types, porosity and fluid saturation to the elastic properties such as compressional and shear velocities, and density. Predicted elastic properties are used to compute reflection coefficients when convolved with a wavelet generate a synthetic seismic volume (1D or 3D).
Assisted History Matching and Development Optimisation
In Assisted History Matching a set of realizations are run. In these a set of parameters is varied between the realizations. The parameters can either be scalars like global transmissibility multipliers, or fields e.g. porosity or permeability. Gaining a full understanding of the mass of uncertain variables and the range of objectives in a reservoir simulation model requires multiple realization workflows. The existing commercial tools may require a multitude of software licenses to run effectively. Our history matching tool can run in as short a time as possible in order to converge on a history match or to understand the impact and range of uncertainties. We can use the same tool to optimize the development the field using same multi-realisation approach.
