Nigeria produces about 2.5 million barrels per day before Covid 19 pandemic outbreak began. The daily production rates sank to the record low of 1.17 million in December 2020, yet still making it the largest producer of oil in Africa.

The nine top oil producing states in Nigeria are:

  • Akwa Ibom
  • Delta
  • Rivers
  • Bayelsa
  • Ondo
  • Lagos
  • Edo
  • Imo
  • Abia

The top producer is the Akwa Ibom state. It accounts for approximately 1/3 of the total daily production.

Out of these 9 producers, the top four states accounts for 80% of the crude oil produced. The nigh states only account for less than 10% of the total land area of the country. This small part of the country that produces this is known as the Niger Delta Region.
